Put away your computers, laptops, iPhone and DS’s and head for the High Country where kids can be kids and adults will exhaust themselves keeping up! This region is an outdoor playground where horse riding, mountain biking, river rafting and rock climbing are the norm during the summer. During the winter, when the world turns white, skiing, tobogganing and building snowmen takes over.
The history of this area weaves its way parallel to the gold rush and tales of outlaws and those that struck it rich abound, particularly in towns like Chiltern, Yackandandah and Woods Point. This is the country idolized in The Man from Snowy River and as you trot along on your own pony, you can almost feel a kinship. Follow the trail of Ned Kelly as he reeked havoc in this region, from Melbourne to Beechworth.
Wildlife abounds here too. Watch kangaroos feeding at dusk at Canblebark Creek, Lake Eildon and The Pines Clearing (near Mansfield). Join rangers for free spotlighting tours throughout national parks and get close to native species at the Mansfield Zoo.
