Kids and long journeys: they don’t always mix. Luckily, in this era of the iPod, DS and portable movies, it’s a little easier to entertain them on long trips.
Surviving long car journeys:
Make regular stops
Stop at places that suit kids (like parks!)
Avoid high sugar drinks and lollies that might send them into a tail spin
Take plenty of games and paper
Get them involved in reading the map
Give the kids this book to research ahead!
Make sure you combat car sickness well ahead with motion sickness tablets or ginger
Avoid arguments by giving the kids a new pencil case with their own set of textas before you leave home
Especially on planes:
Feed babies as you descend to avoid ear problems
Take boiled lollies for older kids for the same effect
Rather than board early with kids, why not let them run around until the last minute, then board so they don’t have to sit still for half an hour BEFORE leaving the ground
Pack a few new toys to pull out when the going gets tough
Try to be seated as a family, without other passengers, so the kids can spread out without annoying others
Ask the cabin crew for kiddie colouring packs
Carry plenty of snacks – especially on flights without refreshments
