A visit to southern Victoria certainly would not be complete without a trip to Phillip Island. This little island is absolutely packed with family friendly attractions and activities, making it one of the top destinations for Melbourne families.
First, the natural attractions on Phillip Island: this little island was home to about 10 colonies of little penguins up until about 1920. They slowly disappeared as humans interfered with their habitat. Eventually there was only one colony left and the Penguin Parade was created to enable visitors to see them, while maintaining their sand-dune burrows. Make sure you book ahead to see the penguins because this is a very popular activity. Not only penguins, Phillip Island is home to seals and koalas too and the koala offers the chance to see them ‘almost’ in the wild.
If manmade attractions are more your thing, Champs Karts, Amazen Things and Panny’s Chocolate Factory are high on the list. The chocolate factory is at the top of mine. The displays here are unique and interactive making this a must-see!
Whatever you do, make sure you spend some time on a beach. From the jetty at Cowes expansive Cape Woolamai and the inlet at Rhyll there is something for everyone.
