Not far from Melbourne, the Mornington Penninsular has become a favourite destination for city families. Here it’s easy to recreate your own childhood with plenty of camping spot, family-friendly beaches, calm waters and expansive sandbars.
Attractions abound with a couple of hedge mazes, the Moonlit Sanctuary and numerous family-friendly festivals. Our favourite is probably the Rosebud Kite Festival in March, but it’s the year-round activities which really delight. Fishing on one of the many piers, picking your own strawberries and squashing them, warm, between your teeth, feeling the sand between your toes and watching the black swans cruise the waterways.
This region is famous for its wineries and you don’t have to miss out completely when you have kids. The grassy areas of Olive Grove are dotted with hidden sculptures, and Stonier Creek provides a playground, box of toys and even a cricket set, to top off your family picnic in their grounds.
