It’s been called one of the most stunning coastal roads in the world and I have to agree. The Great Ocean Road is amazing, and not just for its towering cliffs, sandy coves and world renowned natural features. The history here engaging: especially for kids.
Following the tale of the Loch Ard shipwreck and its two survivors takes you from Loch Ard Gorge to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum, both of which are wonderful for families. The beaches of Apollo Bay, Lorne, Bells Beach and Port Campbell are all well known and the seal colony and Petrified Forest at Petersburg are well worth stretching your journey slightly farther west than most day visitors. Certainly don’t miss the 12 Apostles, and we recommend visiting early, before the tour buses. A trip to the Otway Lighthouse is also a must: not only so you can climb inside, but counting wild koalas on the 12km road to the point is very exciting!
Although the Great Ocean Road is very busy, there are a few hidden treasures where the crowds are fewer. We just love Yambuk Lake!
