From Cardwell in the north to Sarina in the south, Central Coast Queensland is a place of contrasts. Along the coastal strip, sugar pioneering towns like Proserpine and Mackay give way to tropical fruit growing areas like Bowen, famous for its mangoes. The climate varies wildly from the wet tropical air of Cardwell to sunny Townsville or the deep, dark, damp rainforest of Eungella.
Islands are the focus here: from Hinchenbrook National Park just offshore from Cardwell, to Magnetic Island near Townsville and the world renowned Whitsunday Islands, they each have their own character. Discovered by James Cook in 1770, the archipelago runs parallel to the reef and includes desolate, seldom visited islands and renowned resorts. Snorkel among all the fish you remember from Finding Nemo. Walk to island aboriginal caves, build sandcastles on the whitest beach you have ever seen, see koalas in the wild and watch dugongs raise their heads from the seagrass feeding grounds. Central Coast Queensland islands are magical heaven on earth, and the perfect place to make family memories to last a lifetime.
There’s plenty to see along the coastal strip too. Townsville, offers a city feel with numerous attractions guaranteed to entertain the kids. From Reef HQ aquarium to the Billabong Sanctuary, there is something for everyone here. When you need a break from man made attractions Magnetic Island waits just offshore with open arms.
The beaches along the coast are spectacular too, from the intimate bays of Bowen to the long expanses and wandering kangaroos at Cape Hillsborough. During the wet season, when ocean swimming is not recommended, world class swimming lagoons in Townsville and Airlie Beach are a destination in their own right.
Inland from Mackay lays an emerald in Queensland’s crown. At Eungella National Park you are almost guaranteed to see Platypus in the wild, you can fly through the forest on a wire, and swim in pristine mountain waterfalls.
No matter your interests, Central Coast Queensland is guaranteed to meet and exceed your expectations. Whether you want a lazy resort holiday or a week off the beaten track, this region won’t disappoint.
